Day 29- Visit a Historic Adobe

July 10, 2010 by Kendyl Leave a Comment

On Day 29 in 365 Things To Do in Glendale, Ca, visit the historic Casa Adobe de San Rafael on Dorothy Drive in Northwest Glendale.

This alluring adobe home sits behind a tall brick wall and is surrounded by 1.6 lush, manicured acres.   It is believed this home was built in 1865 by Thomas Sanchez but, by 1875,  the property had already been abandoned and left to ruin.  In 1930 the city of Glendale bought the home as a historic landmark and in 1932 the refurbished home was established.

Docents lead tours from 1pm – 3pm every Sunday July through August (the first Sunday every other month of the year).  A Fiesta de las Luminarias (Festival of Lights) and Christmas Open House is held during the month of December.

I was there today, taking my pictures.  I have always wondered about this house, hidden as it is behind the wall.  The whole park feels like a secret place- very quiet and peaceful.  There is a lovely picnic pavilion and a humongous brick fireplace- I would love to sit around that bad boy on a cool summer evening with a roaring fire and lots of friends… but the park closes at dusk.  The house is furnished quite simply in the 19th century style common to the Spanish Settlers.

Maybe I am the last person to discover this little gem, but I think it ia special place and deserving of a little visit.  Preferably with a good book and a nice blanket to lay upon.
