Architectural Extremes in Glendale Homes

by Kendyl on July 17, 2009

Today was an example of the wonderful sort of extremes we experience in Southern California Real Estate.

Once a week we Realtors get together and tour the new homes listings for the week. It is a fabulous way to see a lot of homes quickly, and I devote several hours a week, every week, making sure I am as expert as possible on the current inventory.

Today I saw two completely different homes that are fabulous works of architectural art. The first is a meticulously restored Craftsman at 319 E. Randolph

319 E. Randolph

The Hewitt House is listed as a cultural landmark in Glendale and is part of the Mills Act (super low property taxes). It has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in 2967 sf of living space on a 10206 sf lot.  The price is now $1,035,000.

After viewing that scrumptious bit of period perfection I took a nice ride down the 210 to Shadow Hills- a bucolic enclave where the deer and the antelope play.  Ok, not so much on the antelope.  All sorts of industry people covet this location for it’s closeness to the studios but the complete removal from the hurly burly of city life.

Here, located on a completely private knoll is the most perfect John Lautner home I have ever seen.  Known as the Hatherall House, it is a prime example of modernism and the polar opposite of the Hewitt House.

10160 Maude, Shadow Hills

4 bedrooms and 3 baths occupy 3634 sf of living space on more than 3 acres of land.  Listed for $1,595,000.
