I was out in the "hood" today, in the upper 91201, and I had the most fabulous encounters with our awesome neighbors. Since the stories tell a good bit about what it is like to live in Glendale, I thought I would share.
I came to a house that was modest and clean. The woman who opened the door was about four feet high and sported snowy white hair, a faint mustache and deeply lined face. She wore a simple house dress and a huge smile. I said, "Hi, I am Kendyl, the Realtor with Coldwell Banker. I have my usual report of sales in the neighborhood" She spoke rapidly and animatedly in Armenian. She started with, I imagine, "I don't speak English" (I kinda know what that sounds like in Armenian) but the rest… well she communicated pretty well with hand gestures. She wanted me to come in and have coffee and visit. To her, I was not a salesperson or a stranger- I was a neighbor and a person to visit and share coffee.
This happens all the time in Glendale. I have heard many opinions expressed about our Armenian neighbors, but I wish those people could come with me on my daily rounds. I wish they could experience the Armenian culture and people the way I do…one person at a time.
The second great encounter was with a gentleman, 101 years of age. I love this guy! He greets me at the door fully dressed in natty cords and a plaid shirt. He was neatly groomed and his eyes were bright and clear. He remembered me from previous visits and wanted to tell me more stories of what it was like to be a Realtor in his day. He asked me how much I sold last year and then quickly calculated how much commission that would be. I can't do that sort of mental gymnastics now, and I am less than half his age.
I love meeting people- it's one of the joys of my chosen profession. I hope, someday, that I will meet you!
